Oct 2011: NGO representatives from the Congo Now coalition called on Stephen O達rien, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for International Development, to express concerns in the run up to the DRC elections. These covered: --The problem of reduced international community support for these elections --Insufficient numbers of observers --The importance of preparation for the 2013 local elections In addition, representatives pressed the UK government to take the lead in ensuring effective EU regulation to combat illegal mineral exploitation as a major driver of conflict in the DRC. Mr O達rien acknowledged the role and contribution of civil society (including NGOs) in working for a better future for the DRC. Women and children were at the forefront of DfID痴 work in the DRC. He emphasised Britain痴 increased four-year commitment to the DRC, covering a wide range of sectors, and including 」31m for the current elections. The four-year plan would also provide support for the 2013 elections. On the minerals issue, the UK was fully committed to implementing a workable solution. |
